September on the Tyne

Blue Damselfly perched on a stem

As September draws to a close, at Tyne Rivers Trust, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what’s been a busy and inspiring month across the Tyne catchment:

Our volunteers have been out in all weathers, helping to reduce riverbank erosion, and control invasive species. Balsam Bashing season came to an end, which resulted in volunteers having cleared over 11km of riverbank. Thank you for your time, energy, and commitment.

We’ve been visiting our local schools and communities to share the story of the Tyne, helping the next generation understand and care for our river.

Every September we are in awe of the sights of returning salmon to the Tyne, skilfully captured on camera by keen photographers Bob Telford and Simon Woodley and others who take inspiration from the river’s wildlife, including Sid Gibson who sent us the amazing photograph of this damselfly.

Our team has continued vital monitoring of river health across the catchment – this includes SmartRivers monitoring, FWPM surveys and Big River Watch which all took place this month.

Earlier this month we were delighted to welcome our new CEO, Sophia Stovall. Sophia has been busy meeting colleagues, partners, stakeholders and funders – joining partners Muckle LLP at the North East Charity Awards, joining Tyne Tunnel for the North East Business Awards and meeting Visit Northumberland.

Here’s to another month of protecting and championing this special river.

None of this would be possible without the support of our partners, funders, and the incredible communities who care so deeply about the Tyne.
