How to self-advocate for yourself at work

What is self-advocacy?

When you have a health condition it is really important to self-advocate so that the people around you can understand and support you better. This means understanding your condition so that others can understand it too, and being able to communicate the support you need to create an environment where you feel empowered.

How to self-advocate

  1. Become an expert: Learn about your condition and how it affects you, and gather resources of help and support
  2. Ask yourself the right questions: What support do I need? What challenges do I face? Who do I need to speak to? How can I communicate this to my colleagues?
  3. Be prepared and create a plan: Create a list of your current and future challenges, and consider what accommodations you need for your workspace.
  4. Be confident: Make sure you check in on your mindset and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
