New workplace standard to support menstrual health and menopause – what you need to know
Yesterday the British Standards Institute released new workplace standards for menopause and menstruation which aims to support the health and wellbeing of all employees who menstruate or experience peri/menopause. This is in response to recent discussions which have highlighted the need for workplaces to improve how they support menopause and menstrual health.
Many women and individuals assigned female at birth who are experiencing symptoms relating to menstrual health and menopause often need additional support and adjustments to ensure they can stay in work and effectively carry out their role, as well as being able to access the same career opportunities as their colleagues.
At See Her Thrive, we are absolutely thrilled about the launch of the BSI Menstruation, Menstrual Health, and Menopause in the Workplace standard (BS 30416)! This is a truly incredible development that recognises the needs of employees experiencing menstrual and menopause symptoms in the workplace. As individuals who have personally dealt with PMDD, PCOS, Endometriosis, and menopause, we wholeheartedly support this groundbreaking initiative and want to give a big round of applause to BSI for taking this significant step towards creating inclusive and supportive work environments.
This standard shines a spotlight on the challenges that employees face throughout their careers and finally brings these important conversations to the forefront. By raising awareness, busting myths, and smashing stigma surrounding menstruation, menstrual health and menopause, this standard empowers employees to overcome difficulties with confidence and without the fear of being judged.
As passionate advocates for menstrual and menopausal wellbeing, we truly believe that the Standard will bring about positive change in several key areas:
Education and Awareness: The standard emphasises the importance of educating employers and employees alike about menstrual health and menopause and their impact on people’s lives. This knowledge fosters empathy, understanding, and creates a supportive culture that recognises and embraces the unique challenges faced by so many individuals.
Policy and Procedure Development: We are absolutely delighted to see the inclusion of guidelines that encourage organisations to develop comprehensive policies and procedures that cater to menstrual and menopause-related needs. This means flexible working arrangements, adjustments to working conditions, and access to information and support networks. These policies promote equality and create an inclusive work environment that truly supports every employee.
Support and Wellbeing: We couldn’t be happier about the standard’s emphasis on providing training for line managers and HR personnel. This ensures that those in leadership positions are equipped with the knowledge and skills to support individuals going through menstrual and menopause difficulties. Additionally, the creation of support networks within the workplace is encouraged, which allows people to share experiences, seek advice, and receive the necessary emotional and practical support.
Health and Wellness Initiatives: Kudos to the standard for recommending health and wellbeing initiatives that cater to the unique needs of individuals with periods. This could include access to healthcare professionals, counselling services, and wellness programmes that address both physical and mental wellbeing. Prioritising these aspects creates a culture that truly values the holistic health of employees.
As individuals who have personally navigated the challenges of menstrual and menopausal symptoms, we know firsthand the tremendous impact that supportive workplaces can have on our overall wellbeing, productivity, and job satisfaction. The Menstruation, Menstrual Health, and Menopause in the Workplace standard (BS 30416) is a significant milestone in championing women’s and AFAB rights and promoting gender equality in the workplace.
At See Her Thrive, we are committed to supporting the implementation of the Standard and advocating for even further progress in menstrual and menopause wellbeing. Together with BSI, employers, and fellow employees, we can create work environments where every single individual feels valued, respected, and supported throughout their entire career journey.
Let’s celebrate this amazing Standard as a catalyst for positive change! It’s time to empower people with periods to be happy, healthy, and thrive in their workplace while making invaluable contributions to the success of our organisations.
