Stronger Shores in the North East

To mark the beginning of Marine Week with the Wildlife Trusts, we had a celebratory weekend with the participants involved in the exciting Stronger Shores project.

The project looks at protecting our coastlines from erosion and flooding through the benefits of kelp, seagrass and oysters along the North East coastline.

We were joined by the Wild Oyster Project, South Tyneside Council, the Environment Agency, and we brought together both Durham and Northumberland Wildlife Trusts to deliver a series of fun interactives and games for visitors to the Hauxley Reserve.

The incredible design represents the work of Stronger Shores and was created by Claire Eason of Soul2Sand. The stunning sand mural was drawn by dedicated members of the public and ended as it symbolically receded back into the waves.

Stronger Shores is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes which is managed by the Environment Agency. The programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate.
