Whatever the weather, there’s something wild for everyone this summer

Whatever the weather this summer – wet, dry, hot, or cold – Northumberland Wildlife Trust is guaranteeing everybody a wild time with its programme of school holiday events.

Aimed at keeping nature lovers of all ages of entertained, a number of the events are free thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, with others including self-led trails just waiting to be enjoyed at leisure at a number of the wildlife charity’s most popular sites.

At Northumberlandia, from Saturday 20th July – Sunday 1st September, the public can follow the Creepy Crawlies and Flying Bugs Trail to learn more about the butterflies, ladybirds, beetles, and spiders that call the Cramlington site ‘home.’

In addition, on Tuesday 6th August the Trust’s Wild City team will host a Summer Nature Celebration Day packed with a carousel of summer outdoor fun including tracks and trails spotting, minibeast hunting, creative nature crafting, wildlife story telling and the ever-popular den building.

The popular Storytelling in the Woodland event with local professional storyteller Jim Grant is back on Saturday 10th August. Be prepared to be enthralled as he enchants young and old alike with nature of and the animals that live on the site.

A second day of celebration on Tuesday 20th August will focus on nature and the planet with mindfulness sessions, climate change workshop, poster making, tips on how to act for nature, and a guided walk.

Up the coast at Druridge Bay, there will be the opportunity to join in the UK wide marine awareness events, on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July, at Hauxley Beach including a sand art celebration on the Saturday and a seaweed survey on Sunday 11th August to find out more about marine life along the coast.

For those wanting to experience less watery wildlife, there is the opportunity to join the staff on the wildlife charity’s Hauxley nature reserve at the Magnificent Moths Breakfast Event on Wednesday 7th August, where, in addition to breakfast, there will be the opportunity tocheck the reserve’s moth traps, develop moth ID skills and learn how to make a moth trap at home.

Hauxley nature reserve is a gem on the Northumberland coastline and well worth shouting about. On Thursday 15th August, the Trust’s Wild City hosts the Hauxley Summer Celebration.

For six hours there will be activities highlighting the best of the summer including tracks and signs to test nature detective skills, den building and a bird walk to find out more about the brilliant birdlife on the site.

Stil at Druridge Bay, the Trust’s West Chevington site will be running two great events.

On Wednesday 28th August, there is the chance to walk amongst the wildflowers with Lee Rankin, West Chevington project officer and identify the insects and pollinators that are playing such a vital role in the recovery of the former open cast site at the Meadow Madness event.

Finally, inland at Weetslade County Park, the Weetslade Summer Trail will be running each day from Saturday 20th JulySunday 1st September each day, during which visitors will be able download a trail map to learn fascinating facts about what may be spotted on the former colliery site at this time of year. However, should they prefer a walk with a Northumberland Wildlife Trust member of staff to find out how the former colliery site became a nature reserve, the Weetslade Guided Walk is back by popular demand on Friday 9th August.
