WordPress solidifies position as premier enterprise CMS

New survey highlights long-term adoption and increased open source contributions among global brands and large-scale organisations.

Offering invaluable insights into how major brands and publishers are leveraging WordPress, the second annual State of Enterprise WordPress Survey 2024 provides an informative snapshot of how utilisation and perception of the platform continue to evolve. With responses from over 100 enterprises across a diverse range of industries – including household names such as Amnesty International, The Times, and Princeton University – the report showcases WordPress’s ability to meet the evolving demands of large-scale organisations while delivering robust functionality, cost-effectiveness, and usability.

Published this month by UK agency Big Bite, the 2024 survey highlights WordPress’s growing role as a trusted CMS for enterprises, with 75% of respondents confirming plans to continue using the platform due to its strong long-term value and adaptability. Notably, confidence in WordPress’s capabilities as a standalone CMS solution has surged, with 55% of enterprises now relying on it exclusively – an increase of 17% from the previous year – and almost three-quarters of respondents recognise WordPress as delivering excellent or good ROI.

A particularly positive trend is the significant increase in contributions to WordPress open-source projects, which rose from 38% in 2023 to 61% this year, highlighting the enterprise community’s growing engagement and commitment to the platform’s ongoing development. Additionally, the survey shows that long-standing use of the platform continues to grow, with 75% of respondents confirming that they’ve now leveraged the platform for more than five years – a 16% uplift on 2023. Use of the block editor has also increased year on year.

Iain McPherson, Big Bite CEO, says: “Thanks to support from a cohort of enterprise WordPress agencies and suppliers, this year’s survey has once again helped us to gain valuable insights from over 100 organisations, including a growing number that have contributed for the first time. As well as highlighting why WordPress continues to be a leading choice for large-scale enterprises, more importantly it builds our understanding of key challenges and opportunities for the wider WordPress sector, allowing us to collectively strengthen our value proposition for big brands and ensure that WordPress remains at the forefront of digital transformation.”
